Regardless of the pandemic and its effect on the world, Spain’s high-speed rail service has continued its development at a ‘full speed ahead’ rate. The 500km between Madrid and Barcelona just became a short 2.5hour trip, that will set you back between 10 – 60 Euros (around R190 – R1100). The Spanish state operator Renfe’s low cost service, Avlo, travels at 330km an hour and has 438 seats which will kick off this route on 23 June 2021.

The length of trips vary according to the stops included – with stops at Guadalajara, Calatayud, Zaragoza, Lleida, Tarragona and Girona. The direct route without any stops is a speedy 150 minutes.

The launch of this new route coincides with Renfe’s 80th anniversary, therefore Avlo has opted to mark the occasion and offer these routes at a reduced price until December – 5 Euros (R90) for a one-way journey.
