An insight into local business travel

Club Travel Corporate CEO, Kananelo Makhetha, recently travelled between Johannesburg and Cape Town for business purposes and shares his first-hand experience with us.

I had booked to travel on Airlink and used the email confirmation of my flight to check-in online.  Knowing that there would be additional safety protocols in place, I arrived at the airport 2 hours prior to the departure of my flight.  I noticed that the usual time-limit of 10 minutes at O.R. Tambo drop-and-go had been extended to 20 minutes but because I had driven myself to the airport, I parked my car in one of the longer stay garages.

On entry into the airport building, my temperature was taken by security who also ensured I sanitised my hands and they also checked my boarding pass because only travellers are permitted entry into the airport building.

Sanitising stations were easily accessible to travellers throughout the airport and social distancing floor stickers were present at all queuing areas such as at check-in, security checks and health questionnaire stations.  I advise all travellers to download the health questionnaire required for travel prior to arriving at the airport so that this can be completed in your own time and this lengthy queue can be avoided completely.  Your Club Travel Corporate consultant is also available to provide you with this form in advance.

The various loyalty and business lounges were closed and although a few restaurants were open for business, they are adhering to capacity restrictions and were very busy.  It is advisable to take your own snacks along.

Because of airport staff being behind Covid-19 protective screens at boarding, passengers were requested to hold their identification documents up for boarding staff to view and scan and we also had to then temporarily lower our masks for staff to compare our faces to our identification document photographs.  Travellers with window-seats boarded first and those with aisle seats last to prevent passengers from having to move around unnecessarily.

We were required to keep our masks on for the duration of the flight and were only permitted to lower it while eating or drinking.  Disembarkation was done as usual, starting with the front rows.

On arrival in Cape Town sanistisation stations were available throughout the airport, as well as social distancing stickers where needed.

I made my way to the Europcar counter, where I had an existing car hire booking.  Before approaching the desk outside the Europcar office, a member of the Europcar team sanitised my hands, took my temperature and requested that I complete a health questionnaire.  Once these checks were done, a Europcar representative collected my driver’s license and booking information before collecting my car keys.  The car had been sanitised according to Covid-19 regulations and was noticeably clean.

On arrival at Southern Sun, The Cullinan, the security officer on duty recorded my temperature and asked me to complete the health questionnaire while still in the vehicle.  The hotel made provision for this by having a green container of sanitised pens and a red container for used pens.  This process was available at every point where a pen was needed i.e. reception.

At the reception, my bag was sanitised with a foam sanitiser and I was asked to scan a QR code with my mobile phone to be able to access all hotel regulations, restaurant information and the spa menu without having to touch anything.  This information was also available on the television in my room, along with sanitiser wipes for me to use during my stay.

The hotel restaurant is set-up for social distancing with tables spaced accordingly, cutlery and other items available on the table were sealed and the hotel chefs serve all buffet foods to avoid guests from touching serving spoons.  Restaurant staff wear masks and gloves and all food products were packaged and sealed in single servings to ensure it is not contaminated.

With all the safety protocols in place and assurances from the different suppliers, I had a very relaxing trip and appreciated that these visible changes made me feel at ease.  I thoroughly enjoyed my trip – especially my walk along the Seapoint promenade.
